Do Indians need a visa for Thailand? For a normal holiday, no. Indian ordinary passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism. This 30-day exemption applies to arrivals from 15 September 2026 and replaces the earlier 60-day exemption. You must still complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before you land, and carry the usual entry documents. This guide explains the current Thailand visa for Indian tourist rules, TDAC steps, e-visa for longer stays, fees, extensions, document checklist and common mistakes to avoid.

Thailand has changed its entry rules several times in recent years. The information here is based on the rules reported for 2026, so please confirm the latest details with the Royal Thai Embassy before you book.

What Changed: 60 Days to 30 Days Visa-Free

Until September 2026, Indian tourists could stay up to 60 days in Thailand without a visa. From 15 September 2026, the visa-free stay for tourism is 30 days per visit. If you entered Thailand before that date, you keep the stay granted at your arrival. For a normal holiday of 5 to 10 days, nothing changes in practice, because the new limit is still much longer than a typical Thailand package. It matters only if you plan a long vacation, a multi-country trip or a stay beyond a month.

Visa-Free Entry vs Tourist e-Visa: Which Do You Need?

Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) for Indians

The TDAC is a mandatory online arrival form that replaced the old paper TM6 card. Every foreign visitor, including Indian tourists, children and visa-free travellers, must submit it for each entry into Thailand. It is free when done on the official website.

  • When to submit: Within 3 days (72 hours) before your arrival date, including the arrival day. Do not submit earlier.
  • Where to submit: Only on tdac.immigration.go.th. Avoid websites that charge a fee for the same form.
  • What you need: Passport details, flight number and arrival date, address of your hotel in Thailand and basic personal and health information.
  • After submission: You receive an email with a QR code. Save it on your phone and keep a printed copy for immigration.
  • Date format: Enter dates as DD/MM/YYYY, for example 05/03/2026 for 5 March.
  • Changes: If your flight or date changes, use the Update option on the same official site.

Documents Required to Enter Thailand from India

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival, with blank pages
  • TDAC confirmation with QR code (digital or printed)
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket within your permitted stay
  • Hotel booking or address where you will stay in Thailand
  • Proof of funds such as cash, forex card or bank statement, in case immigration asks
  • Travel insurance (strongly recommended, with medical cover)
  • Passport-size photographs for any unexpected paperwork
  • For children: passport, and a birth certificate or parental consent letter if travelling with only one parent or without parents

Immigration officers may ask about the purpose of your visit and your stay plan, so keep your itinerary and hotel vouchers handy.

How to Apply for a Thailand Tourist e-Visa (For Stays Beyond 30 Days)

  • Step 1: Go to the official portal thaievisa.go.th and create an account.
  • Step 2: Choose the tourist visa (single or multiple entry) and select the Thai embassy or consulate that serves your region in India.
  • Step 3: Fill in personal, passport and travel details.
  • Step 4: Upload clear scans of your passport, photograph, flight and hotel bookings, bank statement and other requested documents.
  • Step 5: Pay the fee using the method shown on the portal for your embassy or consulate.
  • Step 6: Wait for approval and download the e-visa. Carry a printed copy along with your TDAC.

Processing can take around 14 working days, so apply at least 3 to 4 weeks before your flight. The visa fee is generally non-refundable, even if the application is rejected.

Thailand Visa Fees for Indians

ItemApprox. cost
Visa exemption (up to 30 days)Free
TDAC (on the official website)Free
Tourist e-visa, single entryINR 3,000
Tourist e-visa, multiple entryINR 13,500
Extension of stay at immigrationAround 1,900 THB

Visa fees listed above are as per the Thai consular fee revision effective 27 April 2026. Fees and exchange rates can change, so check the official e-visa portal before paying. Agents and visa centres may charge an additional service fee.

How to Extend Your Stay in Thailand

If you want to stay longer than your permitted days, you can normally apply for a one-time 30-day extension at a local Thai immigration office. Visit before your current stay ends, and carry your passport, a photograph, copies of your passport pages and TDAC, accommodation details and the fee. The extension is decided by the immigration officer and cannot be guaranteed. For a planned stay beyond 30 days, applying for an e-visa in advance is safer.

Common Mistakes Indian Tourists Make

  • Skipping TDAC: Airlines may refuse boarding without it. Submit it within 72 hours of arrival.
  • Using unofficial TDAC sites: The official form is free. Only use tdac.immigration.go.th.
  • Passport validity: Less than 6 months validity can lead to denied boarding or entry.
  • No return ticket: Immigration and airlines expect proof of departure from Thailand.
  • Assuming 60 days: Many old blogs still mention 60 days. The current visa-free limit is 30 days.
  • Overstaying: Overstay brings daily fines, possible detention and a re-entry ban.
  • Wrong date format in TDAC: Use DD/MM/YYYY and double-check the flight number.

Thailand Entry Checklist Before You Fly

  • Check passport validity and blank pages
  • Confirm return flight and hotel bookings
  • Submit TDAC on the official site within 3 days of arrival
  • Save the TDAC QR code offline on your phone and print one copy
  • Carry some Thai Baht or a forex card, and keep proof of funds
  • Buy travel insurance with medical and baggage cover
  • Re-check the latest visa rules a week before departure
